The history of the Nash Healey is akin to a movie script. George Mason of Nash and British bespoke car builder Donald Healey met by chance on the Queen Elizabeth during a transatlantic voyage. Healey was looking to acquire American engines and Mason was interested in smaller, niche models to give his company something different from the large established American makers. The result was a small sports car with a British designed and built body, and an American Nash engine. Always produced in very low numbers and surely not cost-effective, production began in 1951 with just over 100 cars costing over $4,000 apiece.
