R2-D2 is an astromech droid designed on the planet Naboo. He first came to prominence for his excellent design in Episode I, when he helped the ship carrying Queen Amidala and the Chancellor's ambassadors (Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi) escape the invasion of the Trade Federation. He later took part in several of the major conflicts of the Clone Wars with his ever-present sidekick C-3PO.
